5000th McLaren heads to Sydney

Lucky Aussie customer to receive 5000th McLaren Super Series model produced

UK-based supercar maker McLaren has celebrated a major milestone in its production car history, with the 5000th vehicle in its Super Series range rolling out of the Woking plant.

And the milestone McLaren, a Volcano Yellow 650S Coupe with a retail price in Australia of $441,500, is on its way Down Under after being ordered by a customer in Sydney.

McLaren's Super Series range, was kicked off with the 12C in early 2011, followed by the 12C Spider, 650S and Asia-only 625C.

The next Super Series model is the recently announced McLaren 675LT, which is an even more powerful version of the vehicle which its creator now calls "the highest volume carbon-fibre supercar range ever".

All models are based on McLaren's carbon-fibre MonoCell chassis, designed to increase vehicle rigidity while reducing weight – all of which improve performance.

"McLaren has come a long way in four short years. The completion of the 5000th vehicle in the Super Series is a fantastic milestone for the brand," observed Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer at McLaren Automotive.

"We have built a solid foundation for the business, delivering record numbers year on year, and I look forward to our next production milestone with the addition of the 675LT  to the Super Series, and the new Sports Series later in the year."

The McLaren Sports Series to which Flewitt refers will be a cheaper, smaller supercar that's expected to compete directly with the iconic Porsche 911 range, which starts at just over $200,000 in Australia.
