Toyota has launched its last Australian-built Camry with prices reduced by as much as $5000, while adding driver-assist safety technology, convenience features and a new sports model.
The Camry Altise now comfortably undercuts all its medium-size competitors except for the Skoda Octavia.
Of Camry petrol models, $4000 has been cut from Altise (now $26,490), $3500 on Atara S (now $29,490), $3500 on Atara SX (now $31,990), and $2550 on Atara SL (now $37,440). The hybrid Altise is $5000 cheaper (now $30,490) and the hybrid Atara SL is $1000 less (now $37,440).
New safety technology – only offered on the top-grade Atara SL – includes autonomous braking, active cruise control, lane departure alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. Blind spot monitoring continues as a standard feature on Atara SL.
A new feature for all models is the preload differential, which improves straight-line stability. Standard safety features continued on all Camrys includes seven airbags, a reversing camera, stability and traction control, and antilock brakes with brake assist and brakeforce distribution.
The new Atara SX is a far more sports-oriented model than before, with 18-inch wheels, a quicker-ratio steering rack (now a 15.9:1 ratio, down from 16.9:1 previously) and new shock absorber tuning.
More than 800 parts are new on the substantially upgraded Camry, mostly related to the new sheetmetal. Only the roof panel and most of the glass remains as before. While all models now include DRLs, unique alloy wheel designs on each, a new-design three-spoke steering wheel, new interior trim and minor door card changes, the improved multimedia screen and wireless phone-charging technology of US models don't make it here.
Atara S gains two-zone air-conditioning, keyless entry and ignition, voice recognition and Toyota Link, which will allow owners to activate Pandora internet radio.
The Atara SL now has power front seats with memory, front parking sensors, upgraded instruments and multimedia screen and DAB radio.
Atara SL also has sat-nav, rain-sensing wipers and electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. SX builds on S with 18-inch wheels, sports suspension, leather interior and rear spoiler. An electric moonroof is optional on SL and SX grades.
The powertrain remains unchanged from the previous model; the 2.5-litre petrol produces 133kW/231Nm on Altise (135kW/235Nm on Atara models, due to their dual exhaust system) and is linked to a six-speed automatic. The hybrid's Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre engine continues with its 118kW/213Nm outputs while the electric motor is as before with 105kW/270Nm.
