A handful of rendered 3D pictures, understood to be patent images, have emerged from the digital ether, revealing the design and proportions of Mitsubishi's next-generation Challenger.
It's clear from the images the rugged seven-seat SUV will gain a sleek new front end incorporating the company's new design ethos dubbed 'Dynamic Sheild'. First seen on the new Outlander SUV, there's a strong visual link between the vehicles.
The new Dynamic Shield design language is best described as providing a bold new corporate face for Mitsubishi vehicles, characterised by a stylised 'X' surrounding the grille area and flowing underneath the headlights. The new design will also permeate other models in the Mitsubishi range.
Gauging by the patent images, it's not just the front end that's been given an overhaul, as the brake lights too appear to sport a modern, new look.
As per the current model Challenger, the new version will be based on the all-new Triton ute and is subsequently expected to maintain its off-road talent.
While these images show nothing of the new Challenger's interior, if the new Triton is any indication it should be significantly more visually appealing with an uptick in the integration of technology.
It's not clear what engine/s will be offered in the new Mitsy Challenger but the Triton's 2.4-litre turbo-diesel is almost certain to reach the starting line. It bangs out 133kW/430Nm.
As previously reported, the new Challenger will benefit from local suspension (and possibly powertrain) tuning and although a local arrival date is yet to be determined, Shayna Welsh, Mitsubishi's Head of Corporate Communications, hinted that early 2016 is looking likely.
"Arrival timing has not been confirmed by Mitsubishi Australia yet," said Welsh, who also noted that "late 2015 would be optimistic".
