NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Mitsubishi teases new look

New Outlander SUV will make its debut next month, but teaser pic previews new corporate style

Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has confirmed that its heavily facelifted Outlander SUV will carry the hopes and dreams of the company, revealing the company's new 'face' in three weeks' time.

A blurry, washed-out image of a small portion of the new-look Outlander's frontal design has been teased by Mitsubishi ahead of the vehicle's public debut at the New York motor show on April 2, after which the new model will be launched in Australia around June 2015.

Mitsubishi's brief press statement invites the public to "come and see the new face of Mitsubishi Motors". Apart from citing the New York motor show press conference on April 2, 11:30am, there is no other information.

The outspoken executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Don Swearingen, confirmed the 2016 Outlander's arrival at the glitzy New York motor show a month ago and is expected to debut a toned-down version of the well-received Outlander PHEV Concept S (pictured in white), which was first seen at the 2014 Paris motor show.

That concept car showed off a brash new exterior design, blending sharp angles and a sporty character and the teaser image appears to imitate that design, albeit in a slightly more reserved fashion.

Mitsubishi's new 2016 Outlander could also tip its hat to the XR PHEV-II concept in a stylistic sense, that vehicle premiering recently at the Geneva motor show (pictured in red).

"All of our 2016 model year vehicles will be refreshed with our new brand identity," Swearingen stated in February, meaning all new models going forward will display what appears to be a simplified grille and a sportier design flourishes.

Stay tuned for full details of the new Outlander, direct from the 2015 New York motor show in early April.
