GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Aston reveals 600kW Vulcan

Limited-edition track-only 7.0-litre V12 supercar revealed ahead of world debut; just 24 to be built

Days after teasing it on video last week, Aston Martin has now revealed first images and details of the all-new Vulcan supercar that will make its global debut in Geneva next week.

As expected, in the same vein as the McLaren P1 GTR and Ferrari FXX K, the Vulcan will be a limited-edition, racetrack-only hyper-coupe powered by the most potent version of the company's naturally-aspirated 7.0-litre V12 – this time generating up to a staggering 600kW.

However, production will be limited to just 24 examples globally and although pricing has not been announced it could go close to $3 million.

The mid-mounted 12-cylinder engine was developed with Aston Martin Racing and drives the rear wheels through "a race-bred rear mid-mounted Xtrac six-speed sequential-shift gearbox.

Aston says its output of more than 800hp gives it a better power-to-weight ratio than GTE race cars that compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and that its new track car will comply with all relevant FIA race safety requirements.

Confirmed specs include a limited-slip differential, magnesium torque tube with carbon-fibre propeller shaft, Brembo racing callipers gripping carbon-ceramic racing discs measuring 380mm at the front and 360mm at the rear, and 345/30 x19 rear wheels with Michelin race-spec tyres.

Track-derived pushrod suspension with anti-dive geometry is complemented by Multimatic’s Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars front and rear, driver-adjustable anti-lock braking and variable traction control.

Given Aston's limited-edition One-77 used a 559kW 7.3-litre V12 to sprint to 100km/h in a claimed 3.7 seconds, expect the Vulcan to complete the sprint in less than three seconds, making it the quickest customer Aston in its 102-year history.

Aston stresses well-heeled customers of the multi-million-dollar supercar – its wildest production model ever – will receive the full gamut of aftersales care, including "expert tuition, technical support and [an] experience program".

It says Vulcan owners will be given "the opportunity to precisely tailor their track day experience through a graduating scale of detailed power and dynamic performance adjustments" as part of an ownership program that will include exclusive track and VIP days.

Based around a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis developed by manufacturing partner Multimatic and wrapped in carbon-composite bodywork, the sleek two-door features a lengthy bonnet, huge rear wings, side exhaust outlets and ultra-low front, side and rear spoilers.

“Aston Martin Vulcan is, by its very nature, a rare and thrilling supercar," said Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer. "Designed and engineered to deliver a genuinely bespoke driving experience that draws on our rich heritage, this car tailors its power and handling to both the capabilities of the driver and the characteristics of the track.

“A sports car for true sports car lovers, I believe the Aston Martin Vulcan – and the unique ownership program that sits behind it – sets a whole new standard in the ultra-high luxury supercar class.”

The new Vulcan will be unveiled alongside Aston's new hard-core Vantage GT3 road car at Geneva show starting March 3.
