Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf on sale for $1.4m

Dealer's mistake reveals Aston’s limo price. Costs more than a Phantom and Mulsanne combined

Aston Martin’s Lagonda Taraf has gone on sale in the UK priced at an incredible $1.4m, it has been revealed.

The British car-maker had declined from revealing exactly how much its Rolls-Royce Phantom rival would sell for, but over the weekend the price of the Lagonda Taraf was accidentally released when it was posted (and spotted by Brit mag Autocar) on the website of London -based Aston Martin dealer, HR Owen.

Originally created for a select Middle Eastern buyers, it was announced last March at the Geneva motor show that production would be ramped up to include Europe, Singapore, South Africa and Australia.

Based on the same aluminium VH Aston Martin architecture as the current range of sports cars, including the four-door Rapide, just 200 Lagonda Tarafs will be made at Aston’s Gaydon (UK) HQ on a dedicated production line upon which Aston previously assembled its limited edition One-77 supercar.

Hand-made using carbon-fibre body panels, the big Aston is powered by the firm’s 410kW 5.9-litre V12. It’s not known how heavy or quick the Lagonda Taraf is to 100km/h, but the super sedan -- which measures in at 5.4-metres long -- is expected to have a top speed in excess of 200mph (322km/h).

Speaking to motoring.com.au in July this year, Aston Martin’s marketing boss Simon Sproule confirmed the availability of the Taraf to Australian buyers.

Sproule says the Brit brand plans to launch a new model each year, aiming at a six-year renewal cycle-plan. In the medium term, a new bespoke V12 is also on the agenda for the marque – it's highly likely this powerplant will be engineered in conjunction with AMG.

On the way to a total annual production target of around 10,000 cars per year, production of Aston Martin sports cars will be capped at 7000 units, says Sproule. Models like the new DBX crossover and a very small number of 'bespoke' cars like Taraf will make up the balance, he told motoring.com.au.
