BMW sources have confirmed an all-new crossover — the X2 — will join its burgeoning SUV line-up by 2018.
Based on the Bavarian car-maker's UKL front/all-wheel drive architecture, the X2 will sit between the next iterations of the X1 and X3, insiders have told motoring.com.au.
It will share its underpinnings with MINI’s next Countryman and BMW’s own 2 Series Active Tourer and Grand Tourer, both of which are on sale now in Europe with all-wheel drive.
As with the new X1 on which it will be based, the X2 – which will be a direct rival for the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class -- is expected to be offered in both entry-level front-wheel drive and higher-priced all-wheel drive configurations.
Unlike the more traditional-looking X3 and X1, the second generation of which will go on sale globally later this year, the X2 is expected to follow the sportier-looking 'coupe' lead from the X4 and X6, so it’s probably not going to be the go-to BMW crossover for practicality.
Don’t expect it to spawn a full-house M version, though, because the transverse-engined X2 will be powered by the same three- and four-cylinder in-line petrol and diesel engines as the 2 Series people-movers.
BMW is developing a more powerful version of the B48 four-cylinder petrol engine, with something close to 225kW of power, so it could eventually deliver an M Performance Automobiles version of the X2.
