German brands pass on LCT savings

‘Big four’ luxury brands pass on cuts for new financial year

UPDATE 1:15pm 02/07/2015: Lexus Australia has now also announced price cuts of $390 for all models except the entry-level IS and ES sedans, (which are now $27 cheaper) as a result of the revised thresholds for the federal government's 33 per cent Luxury Car Tax from July 1.

UPDATE 10:00am 02/07/2015: Toyota has this morning announced the $1300 LCT threshold reduction from July affects four of its models -- Kluger Grande, Prado VX and Kakadu, LandCruiser 200 and Tarago Ultima.

It has therefore adjusted the price of 15 variants within those four models, passing a saving to the customer of $390 for all but one of the vehicles. The 2WD Toyota Kluger Grande, which now falls below the LCT threshold, has been reduced by $377.

An increase in the Australian Luxury Car Tax threshold for the 2015-16 financial year, and the indexation impact of those changes, has provided some pricing relief for customers of key German manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

From today (July 1), the LCT threshold has increased from $61,884 to $63,184 (up $2300), while the threshold for vehicles with combined fuel consumption of less than 7.0L/100km remains unchanged at $75,375. The changes impact the portion of the transaction price above the threshold.

So far only the 'big four' German brands have announced revised pricing, with other luxury car-makers – and all brands with new vehicles priced over the LCT thresholds -- to follow.

Audi has announced reductions of up to $390 for vehicles priced above the relevant threshold.

“We see any reduction in the Luxury Car Tax payable by our customers as a positive move,” said Audi Australia MD Andrew Doyle.

“The concession isn’t a huge sum of money, however, we are not in favour of any tax that penalises luxury vehicle owners any more than buyers of other luxury items, therefore we are very pleased pass along any form of LCT reduction to our customers,” he added.

Likewise, BMW Australia has moved quickly to reprice affected models from July 1, also passing on savings of up to $390.

“I am pleased to confirm BMW Group Australia will pass on to consumers the entirety of savings generated by the increase to the Luxury Car Tax threshold, from today,” BMW Australia CEO Marc Werner said.

Taking a slightly different angle, Werner added: “While the fuel savings afforded by our BMW EfficientDynamics technologies means the changes only apply to select vehicles within our model range, we are committed to acting in the best interests of our customers.”

Mercedes-Benz Australia has “updated our online pricing calculator to take into account the new threshold,” according to Senior Manager Public Relations, Product and Corporate Communications, David McCarthy.

“As LCT is calculated at the retail end, we think it is fairer that it is calculated on whatever price reduction the customer can get rather than an arbitrary cut,” he added.

Porsche has altered pricing for its MY16 vehicles to reflect LCT concessions, using the change to reduce model prices by an even $400. The move follows spec and price hikes for MY16 models announced in May.

Both Porsche and BMW have provided updating pricing lists for affected models (see below).
