Special Lambo cracks $800K

With a $27K price premium, does the Lamborghini Aventador 700-4 Pirelli Edition wear the world's most expensive paintjob?

Lamborghini has Australian announced pricing for its Aventador 700-4 Pirelli Edition, at of $788,200 for the coupe and $821,700 for the roadster (plus on-road costs), ahead of first local deliveries by the end of this year.

That makes both Lambo special-editions $26,700 pricier than the cars on which they're based, which doesn't like an overly excessive price premium given the standard Aventador coupe and convertible are already the most expensive sports cars money can buy at $761,500 and $795,000 plus ORCs respectively.

After all, buyers at this end of the market want exclusivity above all else, and it's not every day that the House of the Raging Bull teams with Pirelli, which has supplied the tyres for every vehicle Lambo has built since its establishment in 1963, to create a limited-edition version of its top-shelf supercar.

However, Lamborghini hasn't said exactly how many Pirelli-edition Aventadors it will produce globally or for Australia, nor how many are already spoken for, so we don't know quite hot exclusive it will be.

"First delivery will be November to December but we cannot disclose where and which dealer," said Automobili Lamborghini's Marketing & PR Manager for the Japan, Korea and Oceania region, Rika Iimure.

"We have several inquiries and discussion so I’m afraid we are not able to say the numbers sold either."

As we reported when it was revealed late last year, apart from eking more sales and profits from a four-and-a-half-year-old model launched in February 2011, the Pirelli Edition was conceived to celebrate more than 50 years of collaboration between Lambo and Pirelli.

But what could have been a very special Lamborghini to celebrate a relationship between two famous Italian brands spanning more than half a century is little more than a unique paint job created by Lamborghini Centro Stile.

Lamborghini says its latest special-edition was "created to celebrate the long and ongoing history of collaboration with prestigious Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli".

"The two firms share not only their Italian origins but also, and above all, a constant quest for technological innovation."

But while even the Volkswagen Golf GTI Pirelli editions received power hikes and special tyres, Lambo's first Pirelli Edition brings no changes to the standard Aventador's 515kW/690Nm 6.5-litre V12, which accelerates carbon-fibre monocoque-tubbed all-wheel drive supercar to 100km/h in the same (admittedly startling) 2.9 seconds and on to a claimed top speed of around 350km/h.

No, instead of power hikes, the Pirelli special is differentiated by a number of striking colour schemes, with buyers offered the choice of coupe or roadster models finished in two different dual-tone paint schemes.

The first features a matte-black roof, pillars, wing mirrors and engine cover, plus front, rear and side and air intakes, which contrast with one of six gloss paint finishes for the body: Bianco Isis, Nero Aldebaran, Giallo Spica, Rosso Mars, Grigio Liqueo and Grigio Ater.

The second is a glossy black finish for the upper parts of the car and the air intakes, instead of the matte finish, which can be matched with four exterior colours: Bianco Canopus, Nero Nemesis, Grigio Adamas, and Grigio Titans.

There are no special sticky tyres, but the otherwise-standard Pirelli P ZEROs – measuring 255/30 ZR20 on 20x9.0-inch wheels up front and 355/25 ZR21 on 21x13.0-inch alloys at the rear – do score red pin striping to match the thin red stripe that runs along the roof, engine cover, mirrors and air intakes.

Oh, the tyres and roof lines also feature the Pirelli logo in red, but there's no change to the 1575kg (dry) Aventador's standard transparent engine hood, carbon engine compartment, glossy black Dione wheels and red callipers (yellow on cars finished in Rosso Mars).
