DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: New Lexus RX

Bigger new seven-seat Lexus RX could be revealed next week

First spy shots of the fourth-generation Lexus RX have emerged just a week before the Detroit motor show opening on January 12, when the all-new large luxury SUV could be revealed.

Lexus has promised at least two world debuts for North America's largest motor show and one of them is confirmed to be the GS F sports sedan.

And while a new IS F or production versions of the LF-C2 convertible or LF-LC super-coupe concepts could also be shown, there's persistent speculation Lexus is ready to reveal its next-generation RX – at least in concept form.

Indeed, the existing RX has been in production since 2008, making it seven years old, and these spy shots show the new model is all but production-ready.

As we've reported, the new RX will grow in size to separate it from the all-new NX mid-size SUV, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol version of which will be launched here next month.

In fact, there's a strong chance it will grow to accommodate at least the option of seven seats, like key competitors such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Volkswagen Touareg and the upcoming Land Rover Discovery Sport and Volvo XC90.

The 2016 RX replaces the best-selling luxury SUV in North America, where – like Australia – Lexus dealers have been crying out for a seven-seat crossover to compliment the larger full-chassis LandCruiser-based LX and GX (sold here as the Toyota Prado).

Apart from being bigger, more luxurious and better to drive (thanks to a new longitudinally engined, rear/all-wheel drive platform shared with the IS and GS sedans), expect the new RX to come with a more aggressive looking design that takes styling cues from the smaller NX wagon and a front-end with bolder grille LED headlights.

Powertrains should once again comprise Lexus' trusty 3.5-litre petrol V6 for the RX 350, and the same engine matched with an electric motor in the new RX 450h hybrid, which will be even more efficient than the current model.
