Pebble Beach: Ventura Orange McLaren 570S

McLaren Special Operations reveals second 570S as production as Sports Series production nears

McLaren has revealed the second of two new colour schemes from its special operations outfit (MSO) for the new 570S, which has now entered the final development stage final stage ahead of full production.

Yesterday's reveal of the trademark Ventura Orange hero colour at California's Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance followed last week's unveiling of a Mauvine Blue purple hue.

Both new vehicles from MSO, which celebrated its fourth anniversary on the weekend in Monterey, are based on the soon-to-be-launched McLaren 570S coupe.

Like its purple stablemate, this traditional orange 570S was created by MSO specifically for the benefit of Pebble Beach’s high net worth attendees.

In fact, McLaren pitched a huge corporate tent along the 18th fairway as a blatant in-your-face statement to its Italian and German rivals.

While the purple 570S featured bespoke interior finishes, the orange car appeared with a selection of new styling details, but McLaren is yet to confirm their production future.

It has, however, confirmed that the first two models from its new entry-level Sports Series range, the 570S and 540C Coupe, have entered the pre-production development phase before first customer deliveries take place later this year.

To mark the occasion, McLaren has released this video and claimed both models have already undergone in excess of 500,000km of testing – both in Britain and on a mixture of race tracks and roads in the extreme heat of the Arizona and Nevada summer and Arctic conditions in the northern Sweden winter.

It says the tooling is now in place at the McLaren Production Centre at Woking in England, in readiness for the "smooth transition of production methods already in place for the Super Series and Ultimate Series models with minimal disruption".

The first of at least two Sport Series models features a new version of McLaren's carbon-monocoque structure and alloy (instead of composite) bodywork. It's less powerful than the 650S and upcoming 675LT and also misses out on the Super Series cars' semi-active suspension systems and active aerodynamics.

The rear carbon-fibre deck spoiler is fixed and the engine is slightly detuned to deliver a more relaxed temperament, however, McLaren still claims the 570S will accelerate to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds on its way to 200km/h in 9.5 and a top speed of 328km/h.

“We’ve added the dimension that the car can be a daily driver,” said McLaren design director Frank Stephenson, who describes the 570S as still being high-end exclusive and based on race car technology, as are all McLarens.

“The 570S is still a no compromise car,” said Stephenson, who was sporting a pair of orange leather shoes true to corporate colours at Pebble Beach.

McLaren says its annual sales volume will more than double by the time the full range of 'affordable' Sports Series models is in production by the end of 2017.

As we've reported, 18 Australians have already placed orders for the 570S, which at $408,000 drive-away is a direct rival for the Porsche 911 Turbo.

First Australian deliveries will commence early next year, while the 540C Clubsport, which costs $350,000, will arrive here around mid-2016.

To the end of July this year McLaren had already delivered 21 cars – just five short of its 26-car total in 2014.

As well as the two MSO offerings, McLaren also used Pebble Beach to display two 675LTs, one of just 50 650S LeMans special-editions and a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR that finished eighth at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
