The car snapped testing in these spy photos is understood to be a road-going version of the AMG GT3 announced prior to this year's Geneva Motor Show.
Caught out on the Nordschleife – the Northern Loop of the Nurburgring – the car in the photos is expected to be around 100kg lighter than the standard AMG GT S, but with 410kW of power under the bonnet.
Initially, Automedia's spy photographers extrapolated the subject vehicle might be a Black Series version of the AMG GT, given its flared wheel arches, but those and the winglets around the front just as likely point to this car being the GT3 version of the GT. Furthermore, while a Black Series version is said to be on the way, it's likely to arrive much further down the track during the GT's model life.
Of course it's possible too that 'Black Series' will be the official name of the road-going GT3 model. That would help Mercedes-AMG out of a pickle, if true. The company has already told motoring.com.au that it will forego the GT3 moniker for this car, because Porsche owns the name, and will not relinquish it to AMG – the company so determined to take market share away from Zuffenhausen's own 911 with the GT.
