Renault revives ECO2 'green' badge

Renewed focus on sustainable motoring to yield three per cent annual carbon footprint reduction – with more following

Renault has announced that ECO2, a badge first seeing the light of day in 2007, is getting stronger teeth in 2015.

Much like BlueTEC, Bluemotion and EfficientDynamics branding from other European manufacturers, ECO2 will clearly indicate the models that are ultra-frugal and kind to the environment in Renault's range, as explained in a press release issued last week.

"ECO2 is stepping ahead! The ECO2 label expresses Renault's wish to offer the widest range of customers a selection of fuel-economical versions to both reduce its carbon footprint and be more frugal when it comes to the oil resource," the press release quoted Jean-Philippe Hermine, director of the Groupe Renault Environment Plan.

The manufacturer remains on track for an average three per cent annual reduction in the carbon footprint of each car it sells for the period from 2010 to 2016. Renault measures this footprint across the entire life of each vehicle built – right through to, and including, its eventual fate in a wrecking yard. Furthermore, each new generation of vehicle will be rated at even lower CO2 emissions.

Previously, ECO2 was applied to Renault models that emitted fewer than 120g/km of CO2 and were built in production facilities certified in accordance with ISO 4001 for recyclability at the rate of 85 per cent. Since 2011 at least seven per cent of plastics are to be sourced from recycled materials.

From September this year, ECO2 will become more stringent and will be applied to the most efficient variants of existing models. All bar two of these variants emit CO2 particles below 100g/km. Kadjar (pictured), Renault's new small SUV, will be the first model range to go on sale in Australia with an ECO2 variant. Future Renault models for Australian consumers will be developed from scratch to offer ECO2 variants in the range. These variants currently in development or already on sale but yet to wear the ECO2 badge are:

Clio and Clio Estate
Energy dCi 90 – 82g/km
Energy TCe 90 – 97g/km
Energy TCe 90 GPL – 95g/km

Captur
Energy dCi 90 – 95g/km
Energy dCi 90 EDC – 99g/km

Scenic and Grand Scenic
Energy dCi 110 – 105g/km

Kadjar
Energy dCi 110 – 99g/km

New Espace
Energy dCi 130 – 116g/km

Renault Australia already has the Clio Energy TCe 90 on offer in its production range, sold in both Authentique and Expression levels of trim.
