Ford Focus RS a bargain bombshell

Aggressive pricing announced for Blue Oval's new all-wheel drive hot hatch

Ford has revealed today that its Focus RS will sell in Australia for the very tasty price of just $50,990.

That effectively places the 2.3-litre turbocharged weapon at a $6000 advantage over the Volkswagen Golf R Wolfsburg Edition, which is also 51kW and 60Nm in arrears of its new rival, which produces 257kW and 440Nm.

Ford had informed motoring.com.au previously that the Focus RS would be positioned somewhere between $50,000 and $60,000, but the official price announced today places the hot hatch much closer to the lower end of that price bracket than expected – and it's just $1000 more than the Subaru WRX STI, but holds a significant engine output advantage there too. Renault's Megane RS 275, with drive through the front wheels only, is also more expensive, and down on power and torque.

The Focus RS is not due to arrive in local showrooms before the middle of 2016, making Ford's pricing announcement today highly pre-emptive. As options, the 19-inch forged alloy wheels with performance tyres will set back customers $2500 and prestige paint will cost an extra $450.

The Focus RS runs through a six-speed manual transmission to its standard 19-inch cast alloys and features drift mode, keyless entry/start, bi-xenon headlights, SYNC 2, a nine-speaker audio system with Bluetooth music streaming, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control and Recaro seats.

"The Focus RS is the latest example of our expanded performance line-up in Australia and showcase of the Ford Performance team's ambitious spirit that is a halo of our innovation locally and across the company," said Ford Australia President, Graeme Whickman.

"It delivers refined power, a high level of technology, advanced Ford Performance all-wheel drive and uncompromised driving dynamics that is true to the spirit of the RS nameplate."

Ford is staging a tactical campaign to boost its own brand by rolling out a series of performance-oriented models – the Focus RS being the sixth in two years. The other five are Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Falcon XR6 (Turbo), Falcon XR8 and the imminent Mustang GT.
