Tesla rolls out improved Roadster

Efficiency gains for version 3.0 two-seat sporty EV extend range by up to 50 per cent
Renowned electric vehicle specialist Tesla is claiming a significant advance for version 3.0 of its Lotus-designed Roadster.
Changes to the vehicle's specification are anticipated to extend the Roadster's range by as much as 50 per cent, the manufacturer advises.
A new technology battery incorporated in the upgraded Roadster is rated at 70kW/h – a 31 per cent energy improvement on the 53kW/h battery pack that has been offered in the Roadster since its global introduction in 2008. According to Tesla, the battery pack in Roadster 3.0 remains a lithium-ion type, but employs new cell technology.
Other changes for the tweaked Roadster comprise enhanced aerodynamics and lower rolling resistance. The coefficient of drag has been reduced from 0.36Cd to 0.31Cd for version 3.0, and the new aero kit, which is yet to be officially revealed, can be retrofitted to earlier models (the first Roadster to be sold in Australia was version 2.5 pictured).
Rolling resistance is reduced in the upgrade model through fitting tyres that are 20 per cent more efficient. The new tyres are rated at 8.9kg/tonne, versus 11.0kg/tonne for the previous Roadster. Tesla has also revised the car's wheel bearings and brakes to reduce rolling resistance further again.
The company plans to demonstrate the updated Roadster's 400 mile (644km) on a non-stop journey between San Francisco and Los Angeles later this month. No word whether it will be a straight run inland or along the winding coast road.
The latest news out of Tesla's Palo Alto HQ coincides with its announcement of a new retail store opened in Melbourne's Chadstone shopping centre. On display is a Model S P85+, a chassis, a wall connector, Supercharger, iPads and a design computer for consumer use. A supercharger facility in the shopping centre car park ensures Tesla owners need never be left stranded, and can take place while the owner is shopping for new apparel or having lunch with friends.
Additionally, Tesla has opened a service centre in Church Street Richmond, located close to the Monash Freeway.
