GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: diesel wagon latest fast Golf

Volkswagen will debut a Golf GTD Estate at March's Geneva Motor Show

Still no news on a high-output turbo-diesel version of the Golf R, but Volkswagen has confirmed it will launch a warm oiler wagon at this March's Geneva Motor Show.

The Golf GTD Estate will be one of the production car highlights for Volkswagen at the show. It features the same mechanicals as the hatch variant launched in 2013. In addition to full wagon versatility, the USP of the model is the combination of performance and economy, delivered by the 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre TDI powertrain.

Volkswagen claims a 0-100km/h time of 7.9sec and fuel economy of "over 64 mpg" – that translates to around 4.4L/100km.

Although the standing start time is nothing to write home about, in-gear performance promises to be at least the match of its petrol counterpart. Handling too should be close to its partner hatch.

There are all the GTI/D styling cues that translate effectively from hatch to hauler in the handsome small wagon. In Europe the wagon rolls on 17-inch alloys, but an Aussie version would likely come with 18s and lower ride height.

Alas the wheel discussion may be moot, there's still no news at this stage regarding the potential arrival of the GTD Estate Down Under.
