Renault is set to reveal its Alpine sports car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race next month, according to reports.
Twenty years after the French car-maker axed the famous Alpine brand, the new Alpine-badged mid-engined, rear-wheel drive coupe is expected to be powered by a 201kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol.
The production car is thought to be only available with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
According to pundits when it goes on sale in 2016 the Alpine will undercut the Audi TT. This has led to speculation that the new Alpine could be priced from $55,000 in Europe.
As well as the all-new sports-car, that originally was co-developed with British car-maker Caterham before the deal soured, Renault is thought to be also interested in using the Alpine sub-brand to launch a whole range of cars. Next up after the A110 is expected to be an Alpine-badged SUV.
Thought to be based heavily on the well-received Alpine A110-50 concept that was revealed back in 2012 at the Monaco grand prix, the production car is expected to feature lots of carbon-fibre reinforced plastics that could even extend to a carbon-fibre tub. If so, the new Alpine will be significantly more expensive and end up a more natural rival for the Alfa Romeo 4C.
