Lotus has released a video of its extreme 3-Eleven lapping the Nurburgring ahead of an official attempt at beating the lap record for production vehicles.
Powered by a mid-mounted 336kW supercharged Toyota 3.5-litre V6, the little Lotus is already the fastest and most powerful road car ever to be made by the company.
Weighing in at less than 900kg, the video confirms the 3-Eleven will have a 0-100km/h time of around three seconds and a top speed of at least 280km/h.
Set to replace previous 2-Eleven, the 3-Eleven once again sticks to the open-cockpit, lightweight formula that it says, on paper at least, will help it post a lap time of around 7:06. For reference, Porsche’s million-dollar 918 hypercar laps the 20.6km Nordschleife in 6:57.
In reality, rumour has it that, internally, Lotus engineers are aiming for a hypercar-humiliating sub-7:00 lap, possibly even faster than the 918’s time.
The 3-Eleven is due to go into production in early 2016 at a predicted price of around $150,000 for the road-going version. The track version – complete with roll cage, lower-geared sequential manual gearbox and aero body package, is tipped to cost about $70,000 more. Word is that the company will build 311 3-Elevens over two years.
