McLaren’s commitment to launch a new car every year will see the 650S pensioned off as early as 2018 and replaced by an all-new, even wilder supercar.
The news that McLaren is already well under way working on the 650S replacement, codenamed P14, was revealed by British magazine, Autocar.
According to reports the new 650S-replacing P14 will again be based around a carbon-fibre monocoque tub and be powered by the firm’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine but with power boosted from the current car’s 478kW to a figure that could even surpass the recently launched 497kW 675LT.
The big power increase is because the British sports car maker will be desperate to set a new performance benchmark and beat the Ferrari 488GTB’s 0-100km/h time of three seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, will be in excess of 330km/h.
It’s not just performance that is set to stun. The next-gen 650S replacement is said to have styling “even crazier” than the P1 hypercar, according to McLaren design boss Frank Stephenson.
Like the current 650S, a folding hard-top Spider derivative is also expected to join the range in 2019, a year after the coupe goes on sale.
It’s not known what will happen with pricing when the new car arrives.
Recently, McLaren carved $50,000 off the pricetag of the current 650S Down Under, with prices now starting at $408,000 drive-away, but in Europe a price bump is expected to match its rivals.
