McLaren P1 GTR: Full details

McLaren has released official pics and spec of its $3.5m track-only 736kW P1 GTR hypercar that will challenge the Ferrari FXX K for lap time supremacy

McLaren has revealed its take on the ultimate track day tool ahead of its official unveiling at the Geneva motor show.

First seen as a concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, McLaren has confirmed the P1’s twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 will produce 1000hp, or 736kW (up from the P1’s 673kW.)

Putting the regular McLaren P1 on a crash diet, engineers cut 50kg from the kerbweight by creating new parts like a lightweight windscreen that’s just 3.2mm thick. Lighter polycarbonate windows also replace the side glass while the glass roof was binned for a featherweight carbonfibre panel.

Finally, a large rear exhaust system made from titanium alloy saves 6.5kg over the road car’s exhaust helping lower the P1 GTR’s kerbweight to 1490kg.

Since aerodynamics and downforce are crucial to lap times the GTR’s aero underwent a complete rethink. Now a large, fixed rear wing sits 400mm above the bodywork - that’s an increase of 100mm in height over the road car’s adjustable rear wing at its maximum setting.

Working in conjunction with front-mounted aerodynamic flaps ahead of the front wheels the rear wing now produces 10 per cent more downforce -- equating to 660kg at 150mph. The road car’s drag reduction system of the P1 road car is retained.

Improving grip and cornering forces the front track of the P1 GTR is 80mm wider than the P1 road car, while the GTR sits 50mm lower to the ground on a fixed ride height. The GTR also runs competition-spec 19-inch centre-locking alloy wheels with slick Pirelli tyres.

Paying homage to the F1 GTR that finished on the podium in 1995 the P1 GTR Geneva show car is painted in the same famous Harrods livery.

Priced at around £1.98m or $A3.5m, the cost of the new P1 GTR includes entry to the McLaren P1 Driver Programme that comes with access to the F1 simulator, a bespoke seat fitting and a design and livery consultation with the P1 GTR’s chief designer, Frank Stephenson.
