Hottest Megane almost sold out

Local allocation of Renault's hottest Megane RS nears completion, but would-be buyers are still in with a chance...

The piping-hot Megane RS 275 Trophy-R is the quickest front-wheel drive production car to ever take on the Nürburgring. Australia received a generous allocation of 50 vehicles, one-fifth of the total number built for Renault's 15-country global market.

It's an impressive affirmation of Australian buyers' devotion to the performance brand, and with exclusivity at a premium – and official figures showing all Trophy-Rs as being accounted for – we had assumed prospective buyers were plum out of luck.

But is seems that if you are still trying to hunt one down all is not lost. Speaking to motoring.com.au at the local launch of the Captur light SUV this week, Renault Australia managing director Justin Hocevar said a couple of examples of the Trophy-R are still unspoken for.

"We've had really good demand for the Megane RS 275 Trophy-R, and the first arrivals have already gone out to dealers and customers," Hocevar enthused.

"We've had a situation where demand is exceeding supply from a dealer point of view, but they haven’t retailed all of their orders yet."

Hocevar said that while a handful of Trophy-Rs remained unallocated to customers, interest in the $61,990 (plus on-road costs) hot hatch was still very strong, and that forthcoming owners should waste no time in laying down a deposit.

"There is a lot of activity on them at the moment, and with the performance pack that comes with it really adding value to the vehicle I'm certain it will not only be very desirable, but potentially collectable," he added.

The allocation of Megane RS 275 Trophy-Rs for the Australian market was made last December (2014), the two-seat hot hatch arriving with the pedigree of a 7:54.36 Nürburgring lap time in addition to its OTT specification and equipment list.

As standard, the Trophy-R arrives with adjustable Öhlins suspension, bigger Brembo brakes, race-ready Recaro Pôle Position polycarbonate monocoque seats, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and a titanium Akrapovic exhaust.

Engine power is boosted to 201kW (275hp, hence the name) and 360Nm, enabling a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a top whack of 255km/h.

Australian Trophy-R buyers also receive the $5000 Nürburgring Record Kit (pictured) as part of the deal, adding track-day six-point harness with aviation-style buckle, aluminium/steel brake rotors, a lightweight lithium-ion battery kit, four wheel covers and two lashing straps.
