Tesla opens Hume Supercharger stations

New facilities power Tesla interstate travel between Melbourne and Sydney

As part of its roll-out of quick-charge facilities, enabling full EV travel between Australian cities, US electric car-maker Tesla has opened two new facilities on the Hume highway. The new Supercharger stations were officially opened simultaneously in Goulburn (NSW) and Wodonga (Vic) on Friday (October 1).

Offering a claimed 270km of travel after 30 minutes of charging, the high-power Supercharger Stations are being installed worldwide, with 501 facilities opened since 2012 and more on the way.

Tesla says the quick-charge system removes ‘range anxiety’ from those wishing to make long trips in a full-electric vehicle. Realistically, it enables Tesla drivers to stop for a coffee, or a meal, while their car is being charged. Tesla includes the cost of the electricity for recharging in its purchase price of the car.

The new Australian centres are located respectively in Goulburn Visitor’s Information Centre at 201 Sloane St and, in Wodonga, at the border city’s Library car park, 5-13 Havelock St.

The Goulburn facility is able to charge up to eight Teslas at a time, while the Wodonga facility offers six charging bays.

Model S is the brand’s sole vehicle on sale Down Under. This week the EV pioneer launched its first SUV, the Model X which is due to go on sale in Australia late in 2016.
