VW close to battery eureka moment

German car-maker’s boss confirms it’s “close to a breakthrough” with battery power -- next-gen e-Golf to get 300km range

Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn has announced the next-generation super-batteries Volkswagen is working on will prove a “quantum leap for the electric car”.

Cheaper, smaller and significantly more powerful than the current generation of lithium ion batteries, the new super cells that VW is developing in California's Silicon Valley will help the next-generation e-Golf travel over 300kms on a single charge.

Winterkorn admitted the new tech is still some way short of Tesla's best (the Model S can cover up to 480km between charges), but said the VW technology will be far more affordable.

Along with his remarks, made in an interview with German newspaper Bild, VW’s boss also confirmed it will make a three-wheel Segway rival called the Last Mile Surfer.

Designed to complete the final part of an inner-city commute, the Last Mile Surfer will differ from the relatively the slow-selling Segway by being more compact and small enough to carry in a car’s boot.

The Last Mile Surfer will also cost less than €1000 ($A1400), says VW.
