New boss for Volkswagen Australia

Former Porsche and Infiniti exec to replace VGA chief, who departs for family reasons

Volkswagen Group Australia has named former Porsche and Infiniti executive Michael Bartsch as its new managing director, effective November 1.

Bartsch, an Australian based in the US for the past 10 years, will be the first Australian to steer the German giant's local operations since Peter Nochar departed a decade ago in 2005.

He replaces John White, who has led VGA since April 2013 but is taking early retirement from the Volkswagen Group and returning to Canada for family reasons.

White started his career with Volkswagen Group in 1993 and has held positions within the group in the US and Canada.

Between Nochar and White, VGA was led by two German women – Jutta Dierks and Anke Koeckler.

Bartsch, meantime, was Vice President at Infiniti America until February this year, when he departed in the latest executive shake-up at Nissan's luxury brand.

Bartsch, 56, was recruited to Infiniti in 2013 by the company's global chief Johann de Nysschen from Porsche, where he was chief operating officer for the US market.

Before that, the ex-pat Aussie was the sales and marketing director at Porsche Cars Australia, following a career that started at Porsche when he joined York Motors in Sydney.
