BEIJING MOTOR SHOW: Audi TT SUV teased

Audi reveals a crossover concept that could preview an all-new Q-car, its answer to the BMW X4

A handful of images of an all-new Audi TT concept car from the German brand have hit the digital ether ahead of the car's official unveiling at the 2014 Beijing motor show later this month.

We last week reported that Audi was looking at expanding its TT range into the family car realm, and the first derivative is looking likely to be an SUV, not a shooting brake as widely reported.

The new concept confirms talk that Audi is intent on expanding the TT family in almost every direction, the new model sporting several design cues inside and out lifted directly from the TT coupe.

Only the images have been released thus far, with no details on the car's engine, drive line, or even its name.

However, it's clear from the vehicle's styling that it draws more inspiration from the brand-new third-generation Audi TT than its Q3 or Q5 luxury SUVs.

The vehicle has all the hallmarks of an Audi TT, but it's most likely to wear the Q6 badge, slotting into Audi's Q-car line-up between the Q5 and Q7 as a direct rival to the upcoming BMW X4 and next year's all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Expected to be based on the Volkswagen Group's (and Audi TT's) MQB platform matrix, the new SUV concept presents with a higher ride height than the TT and is a four-door vehicle, yet it retains the TT's sporty front-end design and bold single-frame grille.

It also mimics the TT's rear-end design with widely spaced twin exhaust pipes, compact rear glass and stylised brake lights.

At the 2014 Geneva motor show Audi's technical chief Ulrich Hackenberg told motoring.com.au that the TT brand could easily expand, confirming that SUVs and compact coupes were under consideration.

"Because the TT is our icon, the TT is a car with a known design language, I can imagine a lot of models. So wait a little bit, the ideas are going round to make more, so we have enough to show next time," he said.

Perhaps the biggest giveaway of the concept car's TT DNA is its interior. The virtual cockpit, wing-shaped dashpad and circular air-vents are virtually identical to the TT coupe's.

Stay tuned for full details on the new TT-look crossover concept.
