Ahead of an all-new Triton in 2014 , MY13 Triton Double Cab models will now be offered as standard with side and curtain airbags, as part of a model year 2013 upgrade.
The extra airbags add to already-standard safety equipment including front and rear door impact bars, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and child-seat restraint points.
The Mitsubishi Triton is long overdue for replacement, having been with
us in its current form since 2005, but thanks to small tweaks and
adjustments along the way, the ute has retained the appeal of a
hard-working light commercial utility, as will a series of
'streamlining' efforts to the recently announced MY13 range.
Several adjustments have been made to price and spec Triton ute and while the entry-level GL single cab price remains steady at $20,990, Mitsubishi has cut the price of several models in the range including the range-topping 4x4 GLX-R double cab model which drops from $48,990 to $45,740 representing a saving of $3250.
Front seat travel is increased across all Single Cab and Double Cab models, offering increased legroom, while a silver-accented instrument panel aims to lift the cabin's ambience. All Single Cab Triton variants (with manual transmission) can be optioned with the choice of a Bench Seat Pack adding a front seat split bench with driver-side slide and recline functionality. This increases seating capacity from two to three.
Triton GLX 4x2 Double Cab variants will also receive an upgraded engine, Mitsubishi now offering the variant with a 2.5-litre 'Hi-Power' intercooled turbodiesel. The engine, found previously in GLX 4x4 Club Cab models, is mated to the choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission with Sport Shift and bangs out 131kW/400Nm in the manual, and 131kW/350Nm in the auto.
Other revisions for the model include updated cloth upholstery, new 16x7.0-inch steel wheels, body-coloured flares and side steps, and a revised centre console with storage box.
The Triton GL-R 4x4 Double Cab adds to those features listed for the GLX with 16-inch alloy wheels, sports bar, rear step, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob. The top-of-the-range Triton GLX-R 4x4 Double Cab adopts 17-inch alloy wheels, a nudge bar, fog lights, unique side steps, and automatic folding side mirrors.
The GLX-R is available optionally with a Luxury Pack which adds a diff lock, eight-speaker audio system, leather upholstery and powered drivers’seat.
Mitsubishi Triton 4x2 variants sold a total of 5448 units in 2012, less than half that of best-seller Toyota HiLux (11,379 units).
It's a theme repeated across the 4x4 Triton range which sold an impressive 13,054 units, but is still less than half of the Toyota HiLux 4x4’s 29,267 units. This year (2013) Triton models have sold a total of 1172 units against 2747 Toyota HiLux sales.
