Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia has pulled the covers off a new limited-edition Crafter cab/chassis.
Based on the Crafter 50 Single Cab Chassis TDI400, just 100 examples of the Crafter Special Edition will be produced.
The exclusive LCV comes ready for work with a 4300mm x 2130mm aluminium tray, front and rear ladder racks, a driver's suspension seat and a 5.8-inch colour-screen audio unit. The tray is fitted with a plywood bed and 10 anchor points.
The model has a GVM of 4490 kilograms, meaning it can be driven on a standard car licence.
Available in Candy White in a long-wheelbase format, the Crafter Special Edition is available now for $52,990 drive away. Pricing for the standard equivalent Crafter starts at $51,550 plus on-road costs.
The Crafter 50 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces claimed maximum outputs of 120kW at 3600rpm and 400Nm at 1800rpm. It's mated to a six-speed manual transmission – no automatic option is available – and boasts a 2000 kilogram towing capacity and a 2322 kilogram payload.
Volkswagen will be hoping the variant will give its Crafter range a much-needed helping hand in Australia, where the nameplate has struggled in recent times.
A total of 188 Crafters (vans and cab/chassis models) had been sold to the end of July 2014 (FCAI data), the figure representing a drop of 57.8 per cent over the corresponding 2013 period. That figure is also well behind that of Crafter's main rivals, Renault's Master (512), Fiat's Ducato (664), Ford's Transit (261), Iveco's Daily (408) and the market-leading Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (1504).
