VFACTS figures for June are expected to show that the sales campaigns for the end of the 2013/14 financial year have not fired as well as in previous years. But Holden and Hyundai have kicked goals all the same.
Based on information available ahead of the VFACTS press release tomorrow, motoring.com.au has learned that of the top 10 brands selling cars in Australia, only Holden, Hyundai and Volkswagen sold more cars last month than during June 2013.
Despite announcing its planned closure of the car-building facility in Elizabeth from 2017, Holden recorded a strong month for sales; June now the 10th consecutive month Holden's sales growth has outpaced the rest of the market.
Insiders say Holden's June was the best in three years – both for the brand as a whole and the locally-manufactured Commodore. Holden's year-on-year performance improved on June 2013 by close to 2000 units (up nearly 18 per cent).
Other Holden models also played a part in the company's June result: among them Cruze Z Series (heavily advertised on TV); Captiva 5 (setting a new June sales record); Trax and Colorado (a new monthly record for both).
Hyundai is believed to have broken its previous monthly sales record in June, and in doing so has exceeded five digits for the first time. The year-on-year difference between last month and June of 2013 is understood to be no more than a hundred units however.
Volkswagen, in contrast, has picked up close to 1400 extra sales in June, seeing sales growth of over 25 per cent.
For the other seven brands in the top 10, however, lower year-on-year sales results took the shine off the June EOFY campaigns.
Even Toyota, normally a huge winner from the first month of winter, has lost roughly the same number of sales as VW picked up during the month.
Mazda and Subaru have lost ground and Ford, Mitsubishi and Nissan have each seen around a thousand sales slip by them. Honda is anticipated to announce June sales in 2014 were nearly 2000 units behind June of 2013.
No doubt consoling three of those manufacturers (Mazda, Mitsubishi and Toyota), they each registered more than 4000 sales of individual models during the month: top-selling Corolla, HiLux, Triton and Mazda3.
Ford experienced a resurgence for its Territory SUV, which outsold the much newer Toyota Kluger during the month.
But taken overall, the figures for the top 10 brands in total are not cause for joy, and they're likely to reflect the downturn in the broader market during June, following in the footsteps of each previous month this year so far.
