SPY PICS: BMW's M-rated SUVs

X5 and X6 M variants tracked down in the field, testing
Performance versions of BMW's X5 and X6 have been caught out in the open by the spy photographers at Automedia.
It's not the first time the spy snappers have picked up the scent of the X5 M, but the X6 M had not previously been seen.
Both SUVs pictured here have been carefully masked to conceal the M accoutrements that normally give the game away – although the camouflaged bumpers don't in any way disguise the mesh-filled air intakes. Nor is there anything BMW can do to hide the wider wheels and larger brakes.
Weight saving in the X5 is expected to enhance the performance available in the M version, with its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. The blokes at Automedia suggest tweaks to the engine for more power and torque could be minor, with BMW perhaps relying on the lighter model to shift the power-to-weight balance in favour of a faster 0-100km/h time anyway. It's expected the X5 M will launch globally late this year, as a 2015 model.
Similarly, the X6 is likely to launch later this year. Cosmetic changes could be limited to grille, front bumper, rear garnish and tail lights.
