Jaguar Land Rover Director of Product Creation and Delivery, Bob Joyce, has revealed a revolutionary autonomous terrain system that could mean the end of off-road vehicles ‘getting bogged’.
Speaking on the eve of the first press day at the New York International Auto Show, Joyce explained how JLR engineers have developed technology that allows a stricken vehicle to free itself. And it should be a reality by 2015.
“Developing the technology has been an interesting exercise in itself,” Joyce said. “To test that the system works, you have to put the vehicle in a situation where you couldn’t unstick it by using the currently available off-road capabilities.
“From there, the driver simply presses a button and the system takes over. It uses a sophisticated algorithm to vector torque between all four wheels, in short pulses, until it effectively digs the car out.”
Joyce went on to say that it may take several minutes, but he has never seen the system fail on any surface. “We’ve even fitted it to a [rear-wheel drive Jaguar] XF, and it works equally well,” he added.
The biggest news? “We anticipate that the system will be available very soon… before the next-generation Discovery arrives in 2015.”
