Keeping pace with – or maybe getting a step ahead of – an increasingly connected world, owners of the new BMW 3 Series challenging Jaguar XE will be able to pre-set their car's air-conditioning, lock or unlock the doors, or even start the engine without actually being physically present – or even in the same country.
The new capabilities will be part of Jaguar's InControl infotainment system that has been developed from scratch to work with smartphone apps enabling owners to make conference calls, book a hotel room or find a parking space via voice control, or through an 8-inch touch screen on the XE's instrument panel. The car's antenna also functions as a Wi-Fi hotspot to provide the best possible signal for multiple internet-dependent devices.
According to Dr. Mike Bell, who is Jaguar's Global Connected Car Director, "In-car technologies in this ever-more connected and fast-paced world are an integral part of your driving experience. With the all-new XE we're introducing an entire suite of cutting-edge driver aids and entertainment systems. Designed and developed from scratch, they will ensure that every journey you take is simpler, more relaxing, safer, and effortlessly enjoyable."
The new Jaguar's infotainment system will be complemented by other new technologies including a laser head-up display that is claimed to produce "sharp, high-contrast colour images" informing the driver of such things as vehicle speed and projecting navigation prompts onto the windscreen. As well as providing sharper and clearer images, the laser system is also claimed to be lighter and smaller than existing HUDs.
