All the big brands are in California this week, and Lamborghini was no different. The storied Italian brand fronted up at 'The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering' to reveal its Huracan LP 620-2 Super Trofeo, which will contest a one-make race series next year – the 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.
''The Huracán Super Trofeo is an all-new car built from scratch with a clear racing concept,'' said Maurizio Reggiani, Director of R&D at Lamborghini. ''We believe the car will be as fun for fans to watch as it will be rewarding for our racers to drive.''
Lamborghini drew on the race car experience of Dallara Engineering and its founder Giampaolo Dallara in the development of the Huracan Super Trofeo. Dallara, the company founder, was employed by Lamborghini as an engineer in 1963, later leading the team that developed the Miura mid-engined sports car. These days the Dallara name is probably better known as a company building Indy cars. According to Lamborghini, Giampaolo Dallara was personally involved in the development of the Huracan Super Trofeo.
A revised version of the direct-injected V10 that powers the road car is rated at 620hp (462kW) in racing form. Rear-drive only, the Huracan Super Trofeo rides on Pirelli tyres that have been specifically designed for the application. The race car is constructed around a hybrid chassis comprising carbon-fibre and aluminium for a kerb mass of 2800lb (1270kg). Aerodynamics and traction are enhanced through a 10-position adjustable rear wing, rear diffusers and adjustable front air intakes.
Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo events will be held throughout Europe, Asia and North America, with the next event taking place at Virginia International Park, Alton, Virginia between August 22-24.
A made-to-order Aventador LP 700-4 was also revealed at 'The Quail', with bespoke details including semi-aniline leather, Alcantara, a Lamborghini patented carbon-fibre material named 'Forged Composite', and special stitching.
