SsangYong's upgraded Rexton is now on sale in Australia, more than two years after it was revealed at the 2012 Busan International Motor Show in South Korea.
Biggest news is a new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that now powers the sole Rexton variant, the seven-seat SX automatic, priced at $39,990 drive-away.
Previously, three versions of the Korean car-maker's third-generation Rexton – a nameplate first sold in Australia in 2002 -- were offered by former importer Sime Darby, priced between $36,990 and $47,990.
It joins updated versions of the Actyon ute, Stavic people-mover and SsangYong's top-selling Korando compact SUV in a four-model range now distributed by Ateco Automotive.
The Rexton's downsized Euro 5 emissions-compliant oil-burner, which replaces the Mercedes-sourced 2.7-litre five-cylinder diesel in the discontinued Rexton, produces 115kW of power at 4000rpm and 360Nm of torque over 1500-2800rpm, with 190Nm of that said to be available at 1000rpm.
As with 4x4 version of SsangYong's new Actyon ute, in which it debuted here, the company's new e-XDi200 engine continues to come standard with a five-speed Benz-supplied automatic transmission.
Official combined fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km and CO2 emissions are listed at 206g/km. Kerb weight is 1985kg and the 2014 Rexton's un/braked towing capacity is 750/2600kg. Service intervals are 15,000km or 12 months.
The Rexton continues to be one of the few large SUVs available with a selectable 4WD system including high- and low-range gear ratios. Ground clearance is 216mm and all-coil suspension is via double-wishbones front and five-link independent rear.
Other changes include a revised interior, a new rear bumper with LED tail-lights and more muscular front-end styling (including headlights and grille) that adopts SsangYong's latest design theme.
Standard safety features include twin front and front-side (but no second- or third-row) airbags, a single driver's seatbelt reminder, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, anti-rollover protection, hill descent control, emergency brake assist, speed-sensitive door locks, front seatbelt pretensioners and load-limiters, and Isofix child seat anchors.
So far there is no sign of a higher-spec SPR version of the latest Rexton, as seen in Korea. However, the SX comes standard with seven seats with leather-appointed trim, a leather-clad steering wheel and gear shifter, front and rear climate-control with third-row outlets, a powered driver’s seat with memory function, Bluetooth phone connectivity with music streaming, MP3/CD player with USB port, trip computer, seven cup-holders, door lamps, roof rails, side steps, 16-inch alloy wheels and a temporary spare.
Five exterior paint colours are available: Grand White, Fine Silver, Carbonic Grey and Space Black. Metallic paint costs $350 extra.
Like all SsangYongs, the Rexton comes with a three-year/100,000km warranty and three years of 24-hour roadside assistance.
