The Nissan Sport Sedan Concept made its global debut at the Detroit motor show today, understood to be a preview of the next Nissan Maxima.
First teased at the Nissan 360 event back in August 2013, the show car features a striking 'Strad Amber' paint job and a host of contemporary styling cues, including Nissan's "floating roof", boomerang shaped headlights reminiscent of the Nissan 370Z, and a new front grille Nissan is calling the "V-motion front".
Power for the concept car comes from a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine producing 233kW, which drives the front wheels via a sports tuned variable continuously variable transmission or CVT - much like the current generation Maxima which has been discontinued in Australia.
The Maxima was recently replaced by the Nissan Altima so it's unlikely we'll see the production version of this concept locally.
Shiro Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer, said "Our new design direction mirrors the strength, power and capabilities of the engineering and innovation that serves as the foundation of every Nissan vehicle".
"The Sport Sedan Concept captures that essence with authentic sports car design and proportions," he said.
With the Nissan GT-R appearing to have some influence over the design of the Sport Sedan Concept, we are inclined to agree with Nakamura on this one.
Nissan has crafted a premium interior for Sport Sedan Concept which it says "offers cues to future production designs". That means upmarket materials, including the diamond patterned quilted leather seats, a new touch-screen interface and simplified steering wheel buttons.
