Peugeot 208 GTi 30th Anniversary revealed

More power, more torque, funky new look for anniversary GTI model that's been ruled out for Oz

Peugeot has whipped the covers of its new special edition 208 GTi 30th Anniversary model that will make its public debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this weekend.

Wider, lower, more powerful and boasting a custom-car exterior finish, the new model is a fitting tribute for a car that set the hot hatch benchmark three decades ago, but Peugeot Australia says it's not to be offered here.

"No, this car is not being considered for Australia," Jaedene Hudson, PR and Communications Manager at Peugeot Australia, told motoring.com.au when asked if we might see the edgy hot hatch on local roads.

Sitting 10mm lower thanks to sports-tuned suspension and with a wider stance – 22mm wider front and 16mm wider rear track complete with wheel-arch extensions – the angry little pug makes a strong visual impact.

The special edition French hot hatch features bold two-tone exterior paint work, with a diagonal red rump strike-through (or 'coupe franche' in Pug-speak) a la the head-turning Peugeot Exalt Concept that lobbed at the 2014 Beijing motor show. It will also be offered in Pearl White and Ruby Red.

The audacious exterior paint scheme is matched with matt black accents, including the side skirts and wheel-arch extensions, and fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres (205/45 ZR 18 aspect ratio) to finish the off the look.

Julien Kerlidou, Product Manager for the 208, said the new 208 GTi 30th "builds on the virtues of a strong identity" but takes the hot hatch to a new level in a "more radical and brutish fashion, making the link with the incisive character of its dynamic performance".

Indeed, the car gets more herbs and spices thanks to some engine tinkering, which improves performance significantly.

The Peugeot GTi 30th's 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine now pumps out 153kW/300Nm, up from 147kW/275Nm in the regular 208 GTi, improving its 0-100km/h sprint time to a peppy 6.5 seconds.

Power gets to the ground via the front wheels through a Torsen limited slip differential and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Other tweaks include recalibrated stability control, adjusted camber angles on the wheels, increased spring, damper and anti-roll bar rates, along with retuned steering and four-piston Brembo calipers working 323mm front discs.

The interior mirrors the exteriors bold black-on-red colour scheme, and is fitted with front bucket seats developed by Peugeot Sport. "These seats are trimmed in an exclusive blend of materials, mainly Alcantara, accompanied by black TEP with red stitching and a black dotted mesh pattern with red highlights," says the French car-maker.

The car will be driven in anger up the Goodwood hillclimb, competing in the 'First Glimpse' class, and will later be presented at 2014 Paris Motor Show in October, with sales starting in November 2014 in Europe.
