GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: smart and BRABUS work magic fortwo

smart launches new 2014 fortwo edition citybeam, and go-faster BRABUS Xclusive red edition
They say it takes two to tango, and it seems smart was listening. Not content with offering just one version of its new fortwo at the Geneva motor show, the pocket-sized brand debuted two all-new variants: the fortwo citybeam and BRABUS Xclusive red edition.
We saw the new fortwo during its test phase last year and speculated that coupe and cabrio versions in both petrol and electric format would be offered.
It seems we were right, and as the fortwo citybeam proves, there is indeed a choice of motive power, as well as interchangeable body panels, three-double-spoke alloy wheels with wide tyres (175/55R15 front, 195/50R15 rear), black and grey leather combination trim, LED DRLs and a €14,490 starting price.
Engine options for the fortwo citybeam include a 52kW three-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol, 62kW turbo and 55kW all-electric version. The interior includes a three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with shift paddles, embroidered floor mats, climate control, electric windows and transparent panoramic sunroof.
Should you want to squeeze between traffic even faster, another limited edition smart, this time by BRABUS, is offered with a 75kW version of smart’s turbocharged petrol engine.
Known as 'Xclusive red edition', the go-faster smart is finished only in Jupiter Red, comes priced from €22,890, and includes features such as a sports exhaust system, revised transmission tuning, titanium-coloured headlights, sports suspension, larger 17-inch alloys, and black leather seats with contrasting red stitch work.
In case that’s not enough, the Xclusiv red edition also features heated seats, side airbags, electric windows, climate control and a transparent panoramic sunroof.
Both models are available for order in Europe now with deliveries expected to commence next month. But if you want one in Australia, for now at least, you’re plum out of luck.
