Skoda has cut the price of its Fabia city runabout by up to $3000 as it reshuffles its passenger car range to make way for the arrival of the new Rapid Spaceback.
Tagged at $15,990, the entry-level Skoda Fabia 77TSI Ambition five-door hatch was priced at $18,990 in late 2013 but required repositioning ahead of the Rapid Spaceback's arrival in May 2014.
The cut-price sub-$16K European city car now competes in the same price bracket as some of the most popular Asian light cars in the market, such as the Suzuki Swift ($15,990) and Mazda2 ($15,790).
Even the range-topping Skoda Fabia RS has had its price cut by $800, now $27,190 for the hatch.
The Fabia is set to be replaced by an all-new model later in 2015, following its predicted global debut at the 2014 Paris motor show in September, when the RS model will be culled from the range due to slow European sales.
All models can be optioned with dual-clutch DSG automatic transmissions for $2300, except on the RS variants which are fitted standard with the rapid-shifting tranny.
The new Skoda Rapid that will slot in above the Fabia and below the Octavia will be offered exclusively as a wagon in Australia, or Spaceback as Skoda calls it, for less than $20,000, which has put the squeeze on the smaller Fabia.
In 2012 Skoda sold 722 Fabia cars, which dropped 23 per cent to 555 in 2013. For the first two months of 2014 sales of the compact car have dipped again.
Skoda will be hoping the repositioned Fabia will turn around flagging sales of the compact car, which shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Polo.
