Skoda has finally been given the green light from its Volkswagen overlords to embark upon a new style crusade, with the VisionC concept the first glimpse of a sexy new model intended to turn heads – and hearts.
The new model appears to have been influenced by the Volkswagen CC four-door coupe, with a low, sleek roofline, short front and rear overhangs and a sporty demeanour.
It will be shown in the metal at the 2014 Geneva motor in early March, and will spearhead a new design direction for the Czech brand.
According to the accompanying press statement, the Skoda VisionC design study is the "next evolutionary step of Skoda's design language," and "underpins the dawn of the brand".
An all-new, sporty four-door coupe is expected to follow the VisionC from concept to reality, the new design direction will also permeate the brand's entire model range, expected with face-lifted models initially.
"During the course of the most comprehensive model campaign in corporate history, Skoda is renewing and broadening the entire range of models," the company asserts.
Widely known as a budget European brand that appeals to the head as opposed to the heart, Skoda has developed the new VisionC design study around a footprint similar to that of the Skoda Octavia. And the concept will be based on the Volkswagen Group's modular MQB platform that also underpins the Golf, Octavia and Audi A3.
Expected to be powered by a high-output but efficient four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the Skoda VisionC is described as an elegant five-door coupe, which means it will have a hatchback instead of a traditional sedan boot.
That Skoda also talks about the new concept as a "dynamic" vehicle suggests that it may also be part of a push by the company to broaden the brand's performance brand, RS. We recently tested the all-new Octavia RS sedan, due in Australia in March, and although it's performance was impressive, this wasn't reflected in its design – something that looks set to change.
