Nissan's popular X-TRAIL is steadily moving away from its off-road-ready roots.
More affordable and now offering seven seats in some variants, the new X-TRAIL is arriving in the market with a model range that's skewed towards front-drive models. For the moment, the front-drive X-TRAIL variants (including seven-seaters) outnumber the four-wheel drive models, although that will likely change once diesel variants arrive, during the third quarter of this year.
When the petrol range goes on sale next month, the new X-TRAIL will kick off at a price point $500 lower than before, with the one-and-only manual (six-speed) variant also the only 2.0-litre model. All other variants in the range are powered by a 2.5-litre engine coupled with Nissan's X-Tronic CVT transmission. The 2.0-litre engine produces 106kW and 200Nm, whereas the 2.5 develops 126kW and 226Nm.
Fuel consumption figures, according to the Green Vehicle Guide, are 8.2L/100km for the 2.0-litre X-TRAIL, 7.9L/100km for 2.5-litre front-drive model with five seats, 8.1L/100km for the 2.5-litre FWD model with seven seats and 8.3L/100km for the four-wheel drive models. Figures are based on using 91 RON ULP.
“The introduction of the All-New Nissan X-TRAIL to the Australian market is one of our most hotly anticipated new product launches to date,” said Nissan Australia MD Peter Jones, in a press release issued today.
“The X-TRAIL has been a mainstay in the Nissan product line-up for many years and has proven a favourite with the Australian public. So we are excited to be bringing the All-New X-TRAIL into Nissan dealerships from March.
“X-TRAIL is one of our strongest nameplates, with around 140,000 sold in Australia since its introduction in 2001, making the launch of the all-new model an important and exciting time for Nissan.”
Nissan is introducing the new X-TRAIL in three levels of trim: ST, ST-L and Ti. All three grades are available in four-wheel drive variants, but seven-seaters are only offered in ST and ST-L grades; and only in front-drive/X-Tronic form.
ST models all come as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, five-inch LCD colour monitor, Rear View Camera, keyless start, MP3-compatible audio with Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, cruise control, ISOFIX child safety seat anchorage in the rear and – in five-seaters only – a flexible storage system named 'Divide 'N' Hide'.
Safety features (in addition to ISOFIX) include dual front airbags, side-impact and side curtain airbags, stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution, Brake Assist, Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist.
X-TRAIL ST-L builds on the ST specification with front fog lights, roof rails, privacy glass, a seven-inch LCD colour monitor, Around View Monitor, satellite navigation, digital radio, leather-accented seats, steering wheel/shift knob, electric driver's seat adjustment (with lumbar support), heated front seats and dual-zone climate control.
As the flagship level of trim, the X-TRAIL Ti offers 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, motion-sensing powered tailgate, auto-levelling headlights, rain-sensing wipers, smart key with tailgate facility, power sunroof, electro-chromatic mirror, Lane Departure Warning, Moving Object Detection and Blind Spot Warning.
