MINI goes techno for 2014

Third-gen MINI arrives in Oz with more technology, equipment, and a lower starting price from $26,650

MINI has this week launched its third-generation Cooper hatch range in Australia. It’s the first all-new MINI since 2006, and one that introduces a considerable increase in technology and equipment.

The larger new F56-series MINI arrives cheaper than before, too. The Cooper now starts from $26,650 (plus on-road costs) for the six-speed manual variant, a reduction of $5000 on the previous model’s entry price.

The new six-speed automatic transmission adds $2350 across the range.

A special package, available to coincide with the new model’s launch and dubbed Cooper Pepper, adds more equipment to the entry-grade Cooper for $29,650 (plus ORCs).

Available from next month (May), diesel-powered Cooper D variants are likewise cheaper, the six-speed manual model starting $3000 less than before from $31,800 (plus ORCs), while the range-topping Cooper S arrives from $36,950 (plus ORCs), a reduction of $3750 compared to the outgoing model.

“The new MINI receives the latest technology and features for a much higher level of refinement. At the same time, we’ve retained the engaging “go-kart” driving style this iconic vehicle is known for,” said MINI Australia general manager, Kai Bruesewitz.

“But the best news for Australian MINI fans is that we have been able to reduce the pricing of the all-new MINI, making it more accessible than ever before.”

More than a drop in list price, the new MINI represents better value than before offering an increase in cabin space, newer technology levels, extra equipment and improved safety.

Longer (+98mm), wider (+44mm) and taller (+7mm) the new MINI Cooper hatch range is the largest yet, and offers even more cargo space than before, the boot growing 51 litres to 211.

New engines, including two three-cylinder units, bring better fuel economy and performance to the range, while reworked transmissions and suspension see refinement increase significantly -- visit our launch review for more info.

But it’s on the value front that the MINI Cooper range has improved the most.

Entry-spec Cooper models arrive with 15-inch ‘Heli’ alloy wheels, Hazy Grey interior decor with Firework cloth trim, manually-adjustable seats, a leather-clad steering wheel and four-speaker audio system with four-line display, USB, Bluetooth and auxiliary audio connectivity.
Adding the Cooper Pepper package equips the standard Cooper with an identical level of equipment as the diesel-powered Cooper D. This means front foglights, clear indicator lenses, 16-inch ‘Victory’ alloy wheels, a front seat armrest, MINI Excitement Package (extended lighting and storage options), dual-zone climate control and a 6.5-inch infotainment screen.

Finally, Cooper S variants incorporate 17-inch ‘Tentacle’ alloy wheels, Black Chequered interior surfaces, Diamond Carbon Black cloth/leather combination upholstery, sat-nav, a three-mode performance control system.

Keyless start is now available while cruise control is standard.

Depending on variant, the Cooper range is also available optionally with adaptive dampers, LED headlights, park distance control, head-up display, camera-based active cruise control, collision and pedestrian warning, high-beam assist, parking assist, seat heaters, a panoramic glass roof, rear-view camera and premium Harman Kardon hi-fi system.

Cooper S models are also offered with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles, launch control and a John Cooper Works steering wheel, which adds $300 to the price of the six-speed automatic.

All models can be upgraded to cloth/leather combination or full-leather upholstery optionally. In total, there are six upholstery combinations to choose from and ten paint colours.

The interior sees the new MINI feature redesigned instrument and centre stack displays, which vary in size depending on grade. The latter is offered in 6.5- or 8.8-inch diameter, and can be further enhanced with a multi-colour LED light ring.

Outside, the all-new Cooper retains the hallmark retro look MINI is famous for, but adds a hexagonal-style grille and circular headlights, more upright tail-light clusters, and black detailing around the lower edge of the body.

Base-grade Cooper and Cooper D variants are identified by grille ribs and tailgate handle in white aluminium, a high-gloss black bumper element and chrome exhaust tip.

Cooper S models boast a model-specific honeycomb grille with chrome frame, anthracite bumper strip, bonnet scoops, brake ducts, a separate rear apron with central exhaust outlet, and of course a ‘S’ logos fore and aft.

On the safety front, the new MINI is expected to receive a five-star EuroNCAP (and ANCAP) rating once tested. It now includes dynamic driver aids such as stability control, an electronic differential lock, speed-sensitive steering, anti-lock brakes, and a crash sensor that unlocks the doors, activates the hazard and interior lights and isolates the battery in the event of a crash.

Of course a full suite of airbags is fitted as standard, as is a partially active bonnet which rises in the event of a pedestrian impact to reduce injury.

“With its updated styling, more sophisticated technology and, last but not least, the more affordable pricing, there is even more reason to love the new MINI,” said Bruszewitz.

>> Cooper $26,650 (man.) / $29,000 (auto.)
>> Cooper Pepper $29,650 (man.) / $32,000 (auto.)
>> Cooper D $31,800 (man.) / $34,150 (auto.)
