More details: New $3.6m Ferrari special

Just 10 examples of US-only Ferrari limited-edition to be built, painted blue with white stripes

Ferrari has confirmed the limited-edition model it has produced just for North America is already a sell-out – despite its $3.6 million pricetag.

Outgoing chairman Luca di Montezemolo confirmed last week that Ferrari will reveal a special-edition US-only model at a gala dinner in Los Angeles on October 12.

That will make it his last public appearance before he is replaced by Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne at the helm of the Prancing Horse the following day.

Montezemolo has now confirmed to Automotive News Europe that the US special – designed to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary in North America and likely to be based on the company's top-shelf F12 Berlinetta – will cost about 2.5 million euros ($A3.6m) and all 10 examples are already sold.

He said it will come with a blue paint scheme with white stripes, referencing the colors used by the North American Racing Team (NART) Ferraris that competed Stateside between the 1960s and 80s, as well as a unique interior design.

NART contested more than 200 races between 1958 and 1982, fielding more than 100 different drivers including Mario Andretti and Phil Hill.

"To celebrate Ferrari's 60th year in the USA, we have developed a special car of which just 10 examples will be built, in addition to planning a major event in Los Angeles to bring together all our American clients and collectors, and a charity initiative," said Montezemolo last week.

It's unclear whether the special version of the F12 two-seater will be powered by the same 545kW/690Nm 6.3-litre V12 as the standard F12, which costs almost $700,000 in Australia.

Ten days before the US special is revealed in LA, Ferrari will unveil what is expected to be the facelifted 458M at the Geneva motor show on October 2.

In its recent five-year product plan, Fiat confirmed Ferrari will continue to develop its four core models, with a major engineering upgrade for one of them each year.

The first of those was this year's facelifted California T, in line with Ferrari's plan to turbocharge its V8 models and electrify its V12 vehicles.
