McLaren sketches 1000hp P1 GTR

First rendering of British supercar brand's ultimate track weapon released

Last month McLaren announced it will produce the ultimate racetrack-focussed version of its already-ferocious P1 hybrid supercar, and now it has released the first sketch of the P1 GTR.

In fact, the official rendering depicts a "design concept" that will preview the limited-edition production car when it's revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California on August 15.

Nevertheless, as the sketch suggests, the P1 GTR will turn up the volume significantly with the addition of massive Pirelli slick tyres, extensive exterior carbon-fibre components and an enormous rear wing to replace the P1's speed-activated spoiler.

McLaren's most powerful road car ever will be powered by a 986bhp (735kW) version of the P1's 543kW/719Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, backed by F1-style KERS electric power unit dubbed IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) that produces an additional 131kW/260Nm, to deliver a total output of 673kW.

The standard P1, which can sprint to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds, lapped the legendary 20.8km Nürburgring-Nordschleife in less than seven minutes, a feat also recently achieved by the Porsche 918 Spyder super-hybrid, at an average speed of more than 178km/h.

All this performance doesn't come cheap, however. While the P1 costs the equivalent of $A1.5 million overseas, McLaren has announced the GTR will set buyers back a cool £1.98 million ($A3.6m).

As we've reported, McLaren has committed to producing a limited run of a more extreme, track-only P1s from June 2015, when production of the 375th limited-edition P1 road car ceases.

The timing also coincides with the 20th anniversary of McLaren's win at the Le Mans 24-hour classic with its famous F1 GTR.

McLaren says the P1 GTR is a direct response to demand from existing P1 owners – the only customers eligible to purchase it – who will be offered a full program of driving events, training, vehicle support and "unprecedented access to the technologies, resources and expertise which have helped develop and train Formula 1 champions".

The McLaren P1 GTR design concept will be unveiled during an exclusive preview at the McLaren Brand Centre on the 18th Fairway at the Pebble Beach Lodge at 6:00pm local time on August 15, before making its public debut on the Pebble Beach Concept Lawn over the following weekend.
