Nissan recalls 40,000 Navaras

More than 40,000 Nissan Navara utes recalled to inspect chassis cracks

Nissan Australia has announced a safety recall for more than 40,000 Navara utilities that may have developed cracks in their chassis rails if fitted with a factory towbar.

The recall involves 40,400 D40-series Navaras built in Spain and sold in Australia between July 2005 and January 2010, although only 9800 of those were fitted with genuine towbars found vulnerable to chassis rail damage.

“The attachment points on the Nissan genuine accessory towbars can create excessive stress upon the chassis frame rails over time. As a result, cracks can occur at the ends of the rails,” said Nissan’s recall notice.

“In extreme cases, sections of the chassis rails around the towbar attachment points may bend when heavy load is applied.”

Nissan says it will advise the owners of affected vehicles by mail, and that affected vehicles will be fitted with a redesigned replacement towbar with additional mounting points at no cost.

Should any chassis welding be required, this will also be carried out free of charge.

Affected customer vehicles fitted with a non-genuine towbar will also be inspected at no charge, but a replacement factory towbar will cost owners $1000 in addition to any repair work.

“Irrespective of whether your vehicle is fitted with one of the above towbars or not, you are advised to contact your Nissan dealer to arrange for an inspection and where required, rectification of your vehicle,” said Nissan.

Nissan said inspection of the problem will take less than 20 minutes and that repairs and towbar replacement – if necessary – will be completed in less than two hours.

Concerned owners can obtain more information from their local dealer or by calling the Nissan Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 035 035.

Thanks in part to its three-tonne towing capacity, the Navara is Nissan’s top-selling model in Australia.

More than 26,000 examples were sold here last year -- including almost 24,000 4x4 versions, making it the nation’s second most popular 4x4 ute after the Toyota HiLux.
