Peugeot revamps commercial line-up in Australia

Safety is central to Peugeot’s new three-pronged van offering

Peugeot will formally re-enter the commercial vehicle space this year with the introduction of three new vans, each paired with advanced safety credentials and five-year warranties.

The French car-maker’s Australian distributor has confirmed the mid-size Peugeot Expert will land in April, followed by the smaller Peugeot Partner and larger Peugeot Boxer around the third quarter.

Pricing and full specification is yet to be confirmed, however, all three will boast the ability to automatically brake in the event of a potential collision, and feature five-year/200,000km warranties.

The Peugeot Expert.

“The all-new Peugeot commercial vehicle range addresses the segment's demands for safety, functionality, low running costs and total cost of ownership -- including five-year warranty,” said Peugeot Australia managing director Ben Farlow.

“We believe that commercial vehicle owners and operators shouldn’t sacrifice safety, comfort and convenience just because it’s a tool of trade.”

While passenger cars have steadily adopted new advanced driver aids, the commercial space is still years behind despite the best efforts of Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Ford.

Peugeot will essentially extend itself beyond those three marques by offering autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as standard on every commercial vehicle it sells, along with a standard reversing camera, rear parking sensors, four airbags, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring.

First cab off the rank will be the Peugeot Expert, which arrives later this month. It will be available in two body lengths, offering a payload area of up to 6.6 cubic metres and 1300kg payload capacity. Along with the aforementioned safety gear, the Expert will offer dual sliding doors and 180-degree rear barn doors as standard.

Around September, Peugeot will lob with the smaller Partner, also spun off the car-maker’s new EMP2 platform. Again, it will offered in two body lengths but with a 4.4 cubic-metre payload area and one-tonne payload capacity.

The Partner features six airbags, a left-side sliding door and 180-degree rear barn doors.

At the larger end of the scale is the Peugeot Boxer, which is in fact a rebadged version of the Fiat Ducato, but with significantly more safety equipment.

The Boxer will be available in two body lengths and with dual sliding doors. Load area extends up to 11.5 cubic metres, while payload and other details will be revealed closer to launch.

Meanwhile, the Australian distributor for Peugeot’s sister brand, Citroen, is yet to confirm the future of its commercial line-up. Officials are set to clarify Citroen’s position in the coming weeks.
