Porsche has confirmed it will revive the 911 GT2 – and it's expected to be powered by the most powerful production flat six in history.
In fact, our sources say it will deliver up to 500kW from a twin-turbo 3.8-litre flat six driving the rear wheels, which should make it at least as quick as the all-wheel drive 911 Turbo S, with a 0-100km/h time potentially under three seconds and a top speed well over 330km/h.
That's not surprising, given the previous-generation 997-series 911 GT2 RS weighed just 1370kg and packed a 456kW/700Nm 3.6-litre turbo six, making it the quickest and most powerful road-going 911 to date, while the 427kW/750Nm 3.8-litre 911 Turbo S sets the current 0-100km/h benchmark at 3.1sec.
What is news that that, unlike the last GT2 released in 2010, the swansong 991.2-series 911 will not come with a six-speed manual like the limited-edition 911 R and upgraded 911 GT3, which was revealed at the Geneva show overnight, but a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch auto.
The news was confirmed today by Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, who told motoring.com.au the company's new 911 flagship will be worth the wait.
“In the past it was a very famous model of the 911, and maybe in the future we will have a GT2 as well,” he said.
“For the GT2 it’s very typical to have big power combined with the turbo engine – today we can’t talk about the power, but when we launch the car I think you will see at which level we can get to with the car. And we’re still working at it.” Porsche
As if there would be a manual transmission, Bluem said: "That’s another philosophy – because there you’re talking about a turbo engine, and the manual we are putting more in the GT3. It will be PDK driven.
“I won’t go into to a lot of details, but we have a clear vision of what we want to do … I hope you can understand when we launch the car we will present everything."
The born-again GT2 won't just be powerful, it will be expensive and exclusive – again. The last GT2 RS, just 500 of which were produced globally, was priced at $560,000.
We expect the new GT2 RS to be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September, before arriving Down Under in 2018.
