SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: Qoros Model K-EV revealed

Chinese car-maker shows off new pure-electric sports car

Qoros Automotive has released the first picture of the car it plans to unveil at next week's Shanghai motor show.

Called the Model K-EV, the four-door coupe is a concept for a performance electric car, says the Chinese-owned car-maker.

Featuring a large gullwing door on the driver's side, the new Model K-EV bucks tradition by offering a passenger door that can either be opened conventionally or slid horizontally.

To keep weight down, the concept features a full carbon-fibre body to maximise performance and the pure-electric car's range.

Beneath its skin, the futuristic coupe is said to be all-wheel drive, presumably driven by at least two electric motors. Speaking of which, Qoros says it's lifted its electric powertrain from -- wait for it -- the Koenigsegg Regara.

The reason, says the Chinese car-maker, is the technology is already proven and ready for 'mass production' -- something Qoros hopes to do as soon as 2019.

It's not the first time Qoros has called on the help of Koenigsegg. Last year the Swedish car-maker – famous for its Agera and Regara hypercars – announced it had sold its advanced cam-less petrol engines to the Chinese car-maker.

The 'freevalve' engines developed by Koenigsegg are claimed to deliver more precise combustion as they allow near-infinite adjustment for valve lift on both the intake and exhaust strokes, which is said to result in an engine that can produce 47 per cent more power and 45 per cent more torque while using 15 per cent less fuel.
