BMW's 5 Series GT will become the 6 Series GT when its replacement arrives some time in 2017.
Expected to be more handsome vehicle than the current car, the 5 Series-based mega hatchback will sit on a new, weight-shaved (-100kg) platform, referred to as OKL within BMW. This platform will eventually extend through the BMW range from the 3 Series right through to the new 7 Series.
Confused? You wouldn't be alone. BMW's naming conventions have been flipped and flopped over the past 18 months leaving half of us scratching our heads in confusion.
Although it picks up the 6 Series naming, the new BMW is clearly 5 Series based and shows elements of the more conservative sedan at both front and rear ends.
Inside, the 6 Series GT is expected to receive an array of new features including a new dash and a revised iDrive with touch-screen and gesture-control functions.
The Automedia spy photographers reckon the new premium hatch will have access to a wide range of engines building from a design that will form the basis of three, four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel configurations.
The engines will more or less duplicate those available in the 5 Series, with a hybrid version available further down the track. And there's the possibility BMW could go for broke with M versions at some stage, too.
The 6 Series appellation could mean the new Gran Turismo will replace the current, four-door version of the 6 Series two-door coupe and convertible which is meant to challenge the Mercedes-Benz CLS Class four-door "coupe".
