Suzuki facelifts S-Cross

Small Suzuki crossover to bring new look and engines by year's end

Suzuki has revealed a facelifted S-Cross in Europe, ahead of its world public debut at the Paris motor show in late September and its Australian release by the end of this year.

The first upgrade since the S-Cross was launched Down Under in December 2013 brings a fresh exterior design and new Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engines.

At this stage it's unclear which of these will become available here, but in Europe the range-topping 2017 S-Cross will be powered by the same 103kW/220Nm four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine as the Vitara S-Turbo AWD, matched with the same six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Currently in Australia, both the 2WD S-Cross and Vitara are priced from $21,990, powered by an 86kW/156Nm 1.6-litre petrol four.

In Europe, however, the upgraded S-Cross will be offered with the same 82kW/170Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that will power the new Indian-built Baleno small hatch to be positioned between the Swift and S-Cross from next month.

The 1.0-litre turbo triple will be offered with either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic, in which guise it outputs 160Nm.

Also available in other markets is an 88kW/320Nm 1.6-litre turbo-diesel four-pot now available here in the Vitara, while front- and all-wheel drive versions will continue on sale.

Outside the engine bay, the MY17 S-Cross is differentiated by a heavily revised front-end with new protruding headlights punctuated by LED eyebrows, a lavishly chromed grille with vertical slats, a more muscular clamshell bonnet and chunkier bumper with lower matt-black skirt, plus revised tail-lights.

Inside the high-riding hatch, which is officially categorised as a small SUV in Australia, Suzuki’s latest infotainment system features a 7.0-inch colour touch-screen and updated seat trims.

Expect the fourth-quarter release of the new-look S-Cross to be book-ended by the new Baleno (August), the born-again Ignis (a small crossover to rival the Mazda CX-3 from January 2017) and Suzuki's next-generation Swift, which should bring 1.4 turbo power when it arrives later next year.
