A Tesla Model S has set a new record for a production electric vehicle at the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Setting a time of 11min 48sec, the Model S P90 beat the previous record, set by a Tesla Roadster, by more than a minute, although the Model S that competed was far from standard.
Claimed to weigh in at 360kg less than the road car, the competition hill climb Tesla had been stripped of its interior and airbags to make room for a competition-spec full roll cage.
Campaigned by battery technology firm, Go Puck, the Model S also had its 90kWh lithium-ion battery cells wrapped in an ice bath to prevent overheating that would have reduced power.
Driving the Model S was Go Puck's MD, Blake Fuller, who was quick enough to also beat the record set for pure-electric motorcycles as well, although the official time of 11min 48.264sec to cover 19.99 kilometres is still a long way off the incredible 8min 13.873 hill climb record set in 2013 by French rally ace Sebastien Loeb driving a Peugeot 208 T16.
