Nissan Middle East has set a new world record for drifting in the United Arab Emirates with a heavily modified GT-R NISMO.
Sending the big Nissan GT-R coupe into a drift at an incredible 304.96km/h driver, Masato Kawabata, had to hold the drift for a certain amount of time for the Guinness officials to verify the record.
Luckily, for Kawabata, the drift was considered good enough and his speed of almost 305km/h smashes the previous Polish record of 256km/h that was set in a modified Toyota GT86.
The event, held at Fujairah International Airport in the UAE, required the entire 3km airstrip for the GT-R NISMO to generate enough speed and then hold the drift before braking heavily afterwards.
The GT-R NISMO driven by Kawabata was far from standard.
Prepared by Japanese-based, GReddy Trust, the famous tuners boosted the standard car’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 to 1029kW and converted it to rear-wheel drive.
Other modifications to the car included ultra-lightweight wheels and specially designed Toyo tyres that could withstand the huge heat without delaminating.
In order to comply with the strict guidelines laid down by Guinness World Records, the Nissan team only had three attempts to nail the record.
